Why Is There No Nobel Prize For Art When It Is As Old As Literature And Is Way More Expressive?

Alfred Nobel, the person behind the concept established this award in 1895 for 5 categories i.e. Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. However, it hasn’t moved a bit since then. Literature is considered important enough to be awarded but not art and this sounds weird to us.

Art is influencing people on a greater scale like literature but still, no one considered it important enough to recognize it internationally with an award. Revolutions are created just on the basis of art and this is not the story of present or future. The past depicts how art has influenced the wars and how art has helped in depicting the warfare and aftermath of it. World War I and Visual Arts is a perfect example of it.

If science, literature, and peace are influencing the society then art is not doing anything less, then why is it not considered worthy enough?

This question is just a lame silly question that appeared in our head but the cause of this might be deeply rooted in our cultural history. In 1901, literature was included important for all kind of missions whether it was scientific or political, hence it was in the 5 categories.

The award has an intent to award “ideal” writing or the more effective term is “worthy writing”. In today’s scenario, the definition of the ideal has changed. Modern fiction changed drastically after the death of Nobel and the credit goes to Joyce, Borges, and Nabokov. These writers never got their credit as they never received a Nobel Prize.

Literature has been known to express the emotions through words and visual arts does it better. Art help is expressing every damn emotion you feel in an elaborate way, you just need a keen eye for the depth.

So, why not just recognize art with a Nobel Prize? There are a lot of artists making big in their respective fields and an award might just give them a push to reach heights and recognition is another by-product of it.

If you need an idea of who deserves it then there is Ai Weiwei from China, El Anatsui from Nigeria and several from Britain and India.
