This Man Collected 168,000 Recyclable Straws And Made A 11-Foot Wave Sculptor Out Of It
Von has been focusing on creating awareness regarding the waste we produce on a daily basis. He is focusing on one statement and that is, “It’s just one straw, said 8 billion people.”
Have you ever thought of how many straws are thrown away each day? The amount of plastic that gets wasted along with it? Knowing how hard it is to recycle plastic, still, people are throwing straws and the number will shock you. Every single day, 500 MILLION straws are being used just in the United States and if we don’t do something about it soon, the situation is going to get worse.

It wasn’t long ago when there was a ban on usage of plastic straws in The US and people had some innumerable things to say. They questioned what harm can be caused by a small straw, the problem was they weren’t seeing the bigger picture. Von took a level higher and took thousands of straws and portrayed them in a way that could show how gigantic problem it is causing in the environment.

Von Wong is not doing this for the first time, in 2018, he came up with the idea of world’s tallest closet and put up 3000 items of clothing in it. With this experiment, he wanted to portray how many straws a person uses in his lifetime. The photographer turned out to be a pro at turning the straws into a masterpiece. The masterpiece is called Von Wong’s Strawpocalypse.

The minor things that don’t matter to you, can make a difference to the whole society. He didn’t just buy the straws online, which he could have done to get things done easily. Von Wong collaborated with a team of volunteers, Saigon Zero Waste, and Starbucks Vietnam and managed to collect 168,000 plastic straws over the span of six months. He achieved what he aimed to by creating art which was beautiful, unique and had a message attached to it.
Over a period of two weeks, they cleaned them and sorted all the used straws based on different colors. It was a lot of work but once you see the results you find it all worth it.
11 feet tall, 100% upcycled installation was the perfect canvas for Von Wong’s Strawpocalypse. It was an imitation of Monet’s art: from far away. And you can’t see them as straws but paint strokes.
If you ever get to be around Estella Place in Ho Chi Minh, don’t miss out Von Wong’s impressive Strawpocalypse, the installation is open till March 24, 2019. It is there to create awareness and convey a special environmental message.
