We know the stereotype and we won’t say that children are spoiled, naughty and anything of any sort. Unlike the basics, we are here to tell you that children are creative and the level of creativity depends on the order you are born in your family and your gender as well.

Psychologists have recently talked about the correlation between birth order, visual imagination, and problem-solving among children who are the single child and the ones which were brought up with siblings. The study published in Creativity Research Journal showed how boys are different from girls when it comes to the skills mentioned. We can say a lot about how the children have been brought up by the results of the study.

Two different tests were conducted for 364 university students and staff. The first test, called line meaning test measured participants’ visual imagination. They did so by showing an incomplete image and by asking them to write all the different things they can perceive from the image and put them in points.

The second test was prepared to measure problem-solving ability. It involved as many solutions as you can give and possible.

The results of picture imagination test were not shocking as it was aligned to the hypothesis. The only children scored higher than the one children who have siblings. It is due to the fact that the only child has more resources to himself or herself for mental development. The fact they grow up more independently is also responsible for the development. This is one trait that is linked to creativity.

What shocked the researchers was the fact that the only girls outscored the only boys in both tests. The result also showed that the only daughters did better than the firstborn sons as well.
However, this research couldn’t explain China’s one-child policy. The country maintains traditional Confucian norms which suggest that only men can carry on the family line. According to researchers, the need of a son is greater than having a daughter. That is the reason families in China defy the child policy of their first child is a daughter. So, if a culture declares them an advantage in the family then how come boys perform lesser than girls?
In the study, researchers wrote, “It is difficult to explain why first sons, as a group, produced the lowest [creativity] scores, even when traditional Confucian culture favors them.” A hypothesis suggests that the boys might consider them “little emperors” and they don’t have to work hard as they consider they have superior status.

Families who are content with one girl child offer a more independent environment which fosters creativity in the brain. The results of the research suggest that the implications are broader than just the order of birth.
